Sunday Snippets: A Free Writing Meme

I have always wanted to start my own meme but I really did not have the time to come up with the rules and regulations of the meme. Zee had me make the rules – which I did not intend to work on really, but I now I have.

Okay so Sunday Snippets is the name of the meme. Lainee Lang helped me come up with an idea to make it a free writing meme/prompt. Our inspiration was our EL 33 classes which helped us pretty much open the flood gates to our so-called “creativity”.

What is free writing? Please do not panic, it is really not a scary thought. As Mr. Wiki put it, “Free writing (also stream-of-consciousness writing) is a writing technique in which a person writes continuously for a set period of time without regard to spelling, grammar or topic.” It means that you just write and write whatever comes to mind regarding the question at hand, irregardless of possible spelling problems, continuity problems, or even topic problems. (say what?!) Well, yes, topic should be in mind, but I guess it would be clearer in the RULES area of the meme.

The rules are pretty much based on Natalie Goldberg’s “Rules for Free Writing” but I added a few and twisted some here and there. The rules are as follows:

  1. Set up a time limit of around 10 to 20 minutes for writing, and when the time is up, you should stop.
  2. Once you have decided to start writing, make sure you keep tapping those keyboards, and do not even pause just to start at a nail or go over what you have read. Just write everything that is on your mind on that instant – be quick about it but do not rush.
  3. Within the time you are writing, disregard thoughts of grammar, punctuation, spelling, neatness, style, or whatever. This time, the act of writing is important and not exactly the style or quality of your post. Think of it as an exercise.
  4. If you run out of ideas regarding the topic, just keep writing anyway. If worse comes to worst, just write whatever comes into your head – just write until your time is up.
  5. If you feel bored with my prompts (sorry, I will try to come up with really good ones), ask yourself what is bothering you, i.e., “Why do I dislike the prompt?”, “Why do I feel so tired today?”. It does not matter if it is far off base, just write about it.
  6. Do not “spell check”, do not reread it – just post it. Just write a disclaimer at the bottom if you feel uneasy writing without double checking. You could redirect your reader to this blog for the rules.
  7. Please try to visit those who have joined the meme.
  8. Please include this banner before every post.

FYI: You may not do it on a Sunday, really. You can answer it some other time. Just make sure you do answer it before I release the next question – which will be next Sunday.

As of the moment, I have no idea how to configure Mr. Linky, so I will update you as I go. I will, however, make it a point to link back to those who have joined.  :) Okies? Okay!

Suggestions, and violent reactions are welcome. I hope to hear from and read from you! :)
