This week, in line with the Olympics mania, Teacher Julie asks:
If you were an Olympian, what sport would you be participating in?
To be honest, the question made me laugh and reminisce a bit. Why? Well…
If somebody asked me this question back in elementary or high school, I was convinced that I would become a Olympiad, representing the Philippines in Badminton.
Sure, I loved watching gymnastics or swimming, diving, or synchronized swimming. But I was convinced that it was possible that I could participate as a badminton player. Why?
Simply because I did play badminton, albeit not very well, but it was good enough that it took me places. I do not mean to toot my own horn, but I competed a lot, and went as far as to represent Region VII in the Palarong Pambansa during the year that badminton was first added into the competition. I won gold then, mind you! It was just in doubles though, hehehe. But that was good enough for me.
Then, for reasons that I would rather not mention, I quit the team when I reached high school. And that was the end of it. These days, I play badminton whenever I have a chance to. I had an opportunity to do great in prison camp’s sports fest, but I did not get to go far since I twisted my foot in a game, it got swollen big time, so I quit for the rest of the competition.
The question made me reminisce and think about the good ol’ times. Life being an athlete is hard. Even when I was still in fifth grade, I would sleep over at my group mate’s house because I was supposed to attend 5 a.m. practice, then by 7 a.m., I would rush to school, by t
he end of the day, I was back at practice at 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. Whew! That life for a 11 year old? Today I think about how hard that was, but at that time, I loved every minute of it (except those numerous rounds around the track), and I think there is that love of the game still and all that goes with it.
I still play a lot of sports – particularly basketball and badminton. I trained in swimming, but my doctor asked me to stop as I was apparently allergic to chlorinated water. Somehow, I cannot picture myself playing basketball in the Olympics. Badminton? Maybe!! Hey, if I were there now, I know I have a friend in Mark Javier (we were classmates in college.. char! hahahaha GOOD LUCK MARK!!).

Aba, sportacular ka pala
You could have been good at it but we sometimes have to do what we have to do, even if our heart says otherwise.
At least you have had your fun, and you still do! You rock!
Thanks and have a great week!
Nyahaha I thought you would answer basketball! And I totally forgot that you were a badminton player! hahaha we weren’t as close as peas in a pod then but I remember you played! Hehehe didn’t know about the gold tho..
BTW, Mark Javier was reported to have diarrhea or something…naa sa Visayan Daily Star kuno…
Anyway check out my sort of off-topic postie here
I’m sure you’ll laugh…I think…lol

Really interesting to see!
Nice post! If I were an Olympian, I would like to be participating in 10000m race. I used to be a long distance runner when I was in highschool and college. Not the brighter star but I really enjoyed competing. My secret dream at that time was to win an olympic race, reaching the goal line while “chariots of fire” soundtrack notes put a thrill on the whole stadium
Hi! Blog-hopped from Julie’s WQ…
You’re such a sports buff pala. You could always go back to badminton if only to keep you fit. My husband too used to play a lot of sports. But now he is too busy (and too fat, hehe).
Happy weekend.
